Q. Why do you require teachers to have teacher certification?
- Teacher certification is one way of evaluating an applicant’s ability to provide a good education for our students.
- some of the international schools where MAF places teachers are themselves accredited and have this standard.
- Certification also helps with the acquisition of a visa for the teacher.
Q. Do you take teachers right out of college?
A. No – we require a minimum of one year of teaching experience. We find that he adjustment to living and working in a new culture and environment requires a certain amount of energy. We don’t want teachers to have to be managing the learning that goes with the first year in a classroom in addition to the cross-cultural adjustments.
Q. Do Short Term Associate (STA) teachers need to raise support (ministry partnership)?
A. Yes, BUT…
All MAF staff must seek to develop ministry partners – those who will pray for them and share in the financial support of the work of MAF. However, for certain strategic teacher slots, MAF long-term staff support will subsidize support so that the teacher can be on the field when school begins. In other words – for those specific positions, full support is not required before going to the field.
Q. Where do you place teachers?
A. From year to year our teacher requests vary, but currently we place teachers in Ecuador, Central Asia and four locations in Indonesia.
Q. Do you give teachers any training before they leave for their overseas assignment?
A. Yes. Teachers have a 2 and a half week orientation at MAF Headquarters in Nampa, ID before leaving for their teaching assignment. This includes learning about MAF, topics on cross-cultural adjustment, missions, spiritual growth, security and teaching third culture kids.
Q. Who decides where a teacher is assigned?
A. Most teachers apply for a specific job opening. The recruiter along with the applicant look at the teaching specialty of the teacher and the needs for the current year and work toward the best match. It is wonderful when a teacher is willing to serve where most needed.
